The Department of Civil Engineering branched a new direction of the Sanitation Engineering (including Water & Wastewater Engineering, Heating and Ventilating Engineering) in 1950, which became the origin of the Department of Building Thermal Engineering.

In 1952, the major of Heating, Ventilation and Gas Supplying Engineering was established in this Department. The first batch of five-year undergraduate students of this major in China were recruited in the same year, which became the cradle of primordial professionals and ranked number one based on the scale and level of education in this field in decades thereafter.

In the fall of 1953, Russian expert Drozdov began to help cultivate the first batch of graduate students and assistant teachers in our department.

In the fall of 1955, famous Russian expert in Heating and Ventilation, A.A. Eonen came to guide the graduate students of Heating, Ventilation and Gas Supplying Engineering.

From 1953 to 1956, several universities like Tsinghua University and Chongqing Architectural and Civil Engineering Institute consecutively dispatched teachers Zengfei Wu, Zhaolin Wang, Jianxiu Wang, et al. to study in our department. In the fall of 1956, the first group of five-year bachelors in our major got their degrees, while the graduate students directed by the Russian experts graduated simultaneously including Jun Guo, Youjia Li, Yu Lu, Changyuan Sheng, Pin He and Zuzhong Liu from Harbin Institute of Technology, Qiangwei Wen from Tianjin University, Zaikang Chen from Hunan University, Huaide Fang and Peilin Chen from Tongji University. At the same time, many teachers from Tongji University, Chongqing Architectural and Civil Engineering Institute, Tianjin University, Taiyuan Institute of Technology, East China Textile Engineering Institute, Hunan University and Xi’an Institute of Metallurgy, etc., came to our Department for short training and later they went back to their Universities for teaching.

In 1957, the nation renowned export in the field of air-conditioning and refrigeration Prof. Bangyu Xu was employed as a tenured faculty for teaching in our Department.

In 1959, the Institute of Architectural and Civil Engineering was founded based on the Department of Civil Engineering in HIT, while the major of Heating, Ventilation and Gas Supplying Engineering was combined into the Department of Municipal Construction at that time. At the same year, Mr. Pengjiu Du graduated from the Institute of Architectural and Civil Engineering Russian at Leningrad and Mr. Yu Lu graduated from the Institute of Architectural and Civil Engineering Russian at Moscow came back to our department with their Russian Candidate’s degrees. Pengjiu Du, Yu Lu and the original faculty of Jun Guo and Bangyu Xu, et al. in our department strengthen this department greatly and make it became the strongest one among peers, which speeded up the development of this major in China.

In 1981, the major of Heating, Ventilating, Air-conditioning and Gas Supplying Engineering was authorized as the first batch of master degree authentication organization.

In 1985, the major of Heating, Ventilating, Air-conditioning and Gas Supplying Engineering was authorized as the doctor degree authentication organization in China. Prof. Jun Guo was honored with the supervisor of Ph.D. student in this major as the first one. In addition, the major of Hydrodynamic Engineering and River Fluid Dynamics was authorized to recruit and train master students in the same year.

In 1991, the major of Heating, Ventilating, Air-conditioning and Gas Supplying Engineering became the station of postdoctoral research associate in China.

In 2000, Harbin University of Architectural and Civil Engineering was combined with Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), and the Department of Building Thermal Engineering was merged into the School of Municipal and Environmental Engineering, HIT.

In 2007, the major of Heating, Ventilating, Air-conditioning and Gas Supplying Engineering and the major of Fluid Dynamics passed the assessment and became the state key majors.

In 2002, 2007 and 2012, the major respectively passed the certification assessment of excellent engineering in the major of Building Environment and Device Engineering by Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China.

 

The Department of Building Thermal Engineering consists of undergraduate section of Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering, and three graduate sections such as Heating, Ventilating, Air-conditioning and Gas Supplying Engineering; Fluid Dynamics, Hydraulics; and River Dynamics. The main research areas in the Department include heating technology, heat pump technology, building energy saving, air-conditioning and refrigeration, indoor air quality, city gas supplying, thermo-technical experiments, new energy and renewable energy, and fluid dynamics and hydraulics. There are two Minister and Province Key Building Energy Saving Laboratories and one Province Research Center of Thermal Energy Application.

In the past 60 years, the Department of Building Thermal Engineering made outstanding contributions for the country’s development in teaching, research, personnel training and many other areas. We have formed our own research areas and academic team with unique characteristics and advantages. The major of Heating, Ventilating, Air-conditioning and Gas Supplying Engineering is one of the largest scales and the highest level with the most integrated faculty group compared with other domestic universities. The whole cultivating system of bachelor, master, doctor and post-doctor has been built in the Department. Both the numbers of Masters and Ph.D. students cultivated in the major rank first in China.

The Department of Building Thermal Engineering has undertaken many great projects such as "Digital Urban Heating System Demonstration Project", "Key Technology Research and Demonstration on Energy-saving of Heating System", "Heating and Air Conditioning System Technology for Existing Buildings", "Environmental Quality Technology for Urban Under-ground Space", "Urban Municipal Pipeline Inspection and Safety Assessment Research", “Key Technology Research and Demonstration Projects in Energy-Saving Towards Heating System in Severe Cold Regions”, Key Technology Rresearch and Demonstration Projects in Energy-Efficient Planning of City Heating System”, Research and Demonstration of Green Ecological Village Environmental Indicator System and Planning Implementation Technology”, “Integrated Technology and Demonstration Projects of Rural Building Heating and Indoor Environmental Protection” etc, which belong to the 9th, 10th, 11thand 12th Five-year National Science Technology Support Projects, and numerous National Natural Science Foundation and overseas joint scientific research projects. In addition, many teaching books were published, such as the book of “Engineering Thermodynamics” was honored with the reward of national excellent teaching course.

 

The Department of Building Thermal Engineering was engaged in strengthening its global impact and international cooperation ever since reforming and opening-up of China. We have created many international communication programs, such as doctoral and post-doctoral exchange programs, short-term training programs, and built friendships with high level universities from countries including the US, UK, Canada, German, Sweden, Belgium, French, Denmark, Australia, Japan and Russia. Lots of faculties in this department were invited to give academic reports in international conference. They were appointed important positions and serviced in many international organizations such as ASHRAE. Many prestigious scholars over the world were invited to our Department to have an academic report and communication. The department is becoming a famous organization internationally and dedicates to advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration for the benefit of the public.
